When installing the vss wire does the diode come off the wire from the unit or is it going to be on the vss wire itself? new at navigation and dont want to have engine lights come on thanks

What unit are you installing? On my AVIC N2 there was no diode. Is it included with the unit, but not pre-wired to the VSS wire? In any case, if there is a diode you'll want to connect it into the head unit's wire (Ususally Pink I think) and make sure that you orient the the diode in the correct direction or you will have problems.

yeah i have a kenwood kna- 4100 the was no diode but the installation manual online says to connect to make sure not to cut the diode off cause it might mess the car up. I was just goin to buy one and put it on the clamp it to the vss wire which way should the white stripe face?

The diode is supposed to keep interference from traveling from the navigation unit to the car's transmission, ABS, and other on-board computers.

You can use a 1-amp diode. Connect it with the stripe (cathode) pointing toward the navigation unit.

However I am not sure if this is absolutly nessecary, at least not on all vehicles..but I imagine as long as everything still works fine after it's installed, the extra safety margin can't hurt.

Oh..this should be obvious but before someone asks...the diode installs in series on the VSS wire.

Just to add to Master's post, I don't think you're gonna need the diode either. The unit should be built for this application already. The wiring diagram and associated parts that came with the unit (not the internet) should be all that you need.

agreed..I have never even seen a diode yet on VSS wires so I don't even know if i have been using it. But I got that info from kenwood.

I would imagine if it really is a concern the diode is already installed...so I guess if you ever come across a unit with an external diode on the VSS wire...just don't cut it off.
