if you take the battery out of the factory remote will the transponder inside continue to work or does it need the battery to function

The transponder will still work without the battery.

I actually remove the board inside the remote for immobilizer programming. We use the 556CW and instead of doing it the way they describe(Deisel mode) i turn the 1st key on for 8 seconds, remove it, turn the second key in for 10 seconds, remove it, then turn the 1st key on again(without the board inside) while holding the pellet next to it. Works every time...

the battery is just for the keyless entry ,so like jworm said the transponder will still work
