well im no expert but when u first buy them they are stiff, so use em for a while and u push the sub in and feel it a little looser they should be ok. Thats how i check them, i dont know if thats the right way but its logical isnt it? and some are stiffer than others so just make your best judgment.

Most subs usually take about two to three weeks to break in.

ok but, is there a specific reason why you can't play new subs at high sound levels..they'll break in quicker, i think....

I would say it wouldnt really matter cause i've spent alot of time at some local shops and as soon as they get the box built and subs in they are cranking the crap out of them!! So, i would say do whats comfortable to you.

My L5 manual says to play them at your usual volume for a week or two.  You can also break them in overnight using some bench equipment.

lol...I have never had a sub for long enough that it seemed to be affected by playing them loud right out of the box...
I dont crank it all the way in the first 5 mins of its life, but usually after about an hour of playing with my stereo I will slam them hard...different subs seem to take different break in periods, ranging from a week to 2 or 3 months...you will notice that they seem to play a little louder and be a little less stiff...
but as I said, I dont think what I do has ever adversely affected any sub that I have ever owned...not that I could tell anyways...

Subs take between 12-20 hours of play to break in.
