A couple questions:

I know capacitors store power or whatever so no juice is sucked from the battery, but what is a farad? how can you measure it in watts?  or how can you measure watts in farads?  The reason i ask is that i need capacitors, but im not sure how many.  Another thing, is adding another battery harmful if you do it the right way?  are there any concequences for doing so?(bad starts, etc.) oh, and another thing......why does everyone ALWAYS hate on sony?...lol

Just cuirous, why do you think you need capacitors? Generally a high output alternator is what people need then they think they need a cap. The general rule for caps is 1 farad per 1000 watts RMS. The major benefit of another battery is if you play your system a lot with the car off. If it is installed right, there is no harm. Personally, I don't hate sony. But I would't buy it either.  They make good home theater stuff. When it comes to car audio you can get better equipment for the same amount of money.

capacitance (Farads) is completely different from average power (Watts) and do not convert. I think the old rule of thumb is 1 Farad for each 1000 Watts..

A farad would be a unit of electrical storage. Or an exact definition- "Farad - The basic unit of capacitance. A capacitor has a value of one farad when it can store one coulomb of charge with one volt across it." This was taken from the glossary section of the site. And as far as sony, I personally haven't seen anything that I like except for a little 4 inch screen I had like 5 years ago, that is the only thing I had ever liked sony.

well, eventually, i'm hoping to hook up 3, 1000 watt xplod(i know, i know) amps (xm-2165 i believe).  i might even hook up the little tiny 100 watt crap amps i have juss for my 6 1/2"s.  im not sure if juss the alternator will work.  i plan on replacing the alternator with a better one soon, but again, i dont know if that will be enough.  thats why i was asking about the battery also.  i was wondering if adding a battery would help in any way.  everything thats going in my van is going to be sony(h/u, amps, subs--------4 10" p5 series & 2 12" p5 series), and i juss dont understand why everyone dislikes sony so much.  the only thing i buy now is sony because the setup i have(really nothing special, juss some diy stuff) sounds really nice.  no one can believe it when i roll up in my beat van and blast em with only 2 10" p5s.  it juss seems to me that no one gives sony a fair shot.

ya, get a alt.  in the long run you will be happyer,,,especially with that kind of electrical usage.  You will need at least a 150 amp alt to keep the system in the 14 volt range.  And sony is the most in-efficient amps i have ever seen,,,so your gona need that extra juice.

I started reading this thread and when i got to the post on wanting to put in 3 1000 watt amps in 2f2f4evva vehicle i sarted to laugh!!!!  that amp he is talking about only puts out 400 watts bridged!!!! HAHAHA  I work at circuit city and we sell those things for 200 brand new!!!  My store uses them on our rear speakers 'cause that is all they are powerful enough for!!!!

One of the reasons everyone always hates on sony car audio is because they ALWAYS over-rate and underpower their stuff!!!  (not to mention their sq aint so good)  when you get the chance, go to circuit city and have them play a pair of sony 6.5 and then have them play the infinty 6.5 speakers (only $30 more)  and see the difference!!!!!  (I do it every day)

Please don't be a poser and use all sony....   a deck... ok i guess, but no speakers or amps!

Hey silversteve, I really don't care where you work, with an attitude like that you wouldn't be working there long if I was the manager, maybe it's all the customer can afford? I don't sell Sony but after reading your reply I would be more than happy to go out and find the equipment for him. Sure Sony doesn't make some of the best audio equipment, it doesn't mean you need to slam it the way you have and piss off a customer who works hard to save for equipment and Sony may be all they can afford, learn some tact my friend, if you want to excel in this industry, you need it. Did you know that Sony used to build some really good car audio equipment?
Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.
