you're right. when r/s'd that thin guage purple wire will go to ground when cranking (just like the diagram above), thats why you put it on either pin 85 or 86 (either/or unless you have a supression diode across 85-86). the opposite pin, you're going to want to connect to 12v+. the reason for this is, when the r/s is physically cranking the starter, the relay will turn ON.
i just did a boa 165 on a '03 impala earlier today. the boa doesn't have any ribbon cable anyway, so you'll need to find another source for the relay to turn on/off. what i'd do is   
pin 85: connect to purple 12V+ starter wire
pin 86: connect to ground
pin 87: to ground through 180 ohm resistor
pin 30: connect to negative triggered 2nd starter wire.
