I have seen this a couple of times before and I remember now why it was this way--
One of the ways that Olds distinguished certain years of the 88 and 98 was to use amver/red on the 88 and straight red on the 98. Otherwise the housings were identical. If am 88 taillight assembly was used as a crash part on a 98, it would have the amber portion, but the wiring was assuming all red lenses. I know they did this back in the late 80s on the 1st generation of FWD Regency 98s / Delta 88s

cali has some crazy laws, if you have the color lights, to high or too low of a bumper, or some bullcrap like that..they will ticket you
...BUT...they also have a law that 2 motor vehicles may share 1 lane while on a highway or interstate ( it was made probably for motorcycles) IE: two motorcycles may travel side by side sharing one single lane as long as there on a highway or interstate. since a motorcycle is concitered a motor vehicle because of registration and taxes...they can also share a lane with a car/truck      IE: 2 cars are side by side BUT in diffrent lanes, a motorcycle can legaly split the cars and go between them aslong as both tires are in one or the other lanes...Do you have any idea how close of a fit it would be to squeeze a car/truck and a bike in one lane with out tearing mirrors off? now that really sounds safe to me but if the bike has some neons on it, your gonna get a ticket for sure
there is no cure for stupidity
