I recently purchased a Panasonic (in-dash) DVD player (CQ-DVR7000u) before installing, I was reading
through the install manual. I noticed that there is a wire that "MUST BE CONNECTED FOR SAFETY SAKE"
this wire was to be connected to the parking brake switch. My gut feeling is that this will only allow video to
be played while the brake is on??? Is this correct?? If this is correct, It does me no good to have the system
operating this way. So my next question is how to override this. Can I just leave it disconnected?? Does it
need 12 volts to to operate?? HELP! Thanks.

You need a GROUND signal to this wire. If the Panasonic is anything like the Alpine, you will need to be able to toggle this wire . I conected this wire to a GROUND and put a toggle switch inline of this wire and now you can turn on/off the " parking brake " with a flip of the switch.

Hey Meatball,

You`re right that grounding that wire will allow the indash player to function but for safety`s sake I recommend you hook it up to the handbrake and keep things legal.  This is part of this ongoing debate about cellphone distraction during driving....and as you can imagine watching the hockey game or Shania Twain can be as distracting (especially Shania).  It`s a whole different story with REAR SEAT ENTERTAINEMENT like in a van where the driver cannot see the screen. Do the smart thing.....we want to see you at the sound-offs.    Parking Brake Switch and DVD -- posted image.

Prepare your future. It wasn't the lack of stones that killed the stone age.

Usually the headunit needs to see :Brake On,Pbrake On/Off/On, Brake Off

That's the sequence that will let it turn on. You'll have to read you manual to make sure that's what to do. But I've seen it often where guys use a toggle instead of the PBrake. You just need to be very, very conscious of when you use it, and realise you are breaking the law.

Thanks for all for the info.  I installed the unit and used the ground with a toggle switch.  As it turns out, the Panasonic that I have doesn't need the toggle, but I guess it can't hurt.  Both monitors ARE in the headrests, so you don't have to worry about contributing to any illegal behavior!  Thanks again!

Warning, do not read the following post if you are a goody two shoes, never committed a crime, always obey the law sissy!

***Begin illegal behavior***

You can bypass this little security feature 2 ways. One with switches to fool the monitor into thinking the brake has been depressed and the parking brake is on, or there is a guy near me who manufactures small computer chips that connect to those "safety" wires and fools the monitor for you. I have had it for a few months now without problems and it allows me to change my GPS info while driving (a feature disabled by Alpine's DVD GPS system) and play movies while driving as well and it frees up my dash by not having me need to install a switch or two to bypass their safety.

***End Illegal Behavior***

Sinister..

I too have the alpine GPS which I use "on the fly".  Why the gov't thinks it's safer to cross four lanes of traffic during rush hour, park in the emergency lane (waiting to get slammed from behind), then try to merge back into traffic is something I won't even try to figure out.  Must be in the catagory of Military "Intelligence".

I have ltd experience in auto electronics so, when my voltmeter read + on the supply side with the brake on OR off (which it should) I was lost as to how it effects the GPS.  I have resorted to depresing the PB one click.

I'll try the toggle

The wire is a RED and it is a ( + ) output at the light switch. Make sure you test for wire verification with a DMM.
