Can you just cut the wire for the adapter that plugs into your vehicles 12 volt power supply and wire it up through the switched power and ground on the cars stereo wire harness?

Where the wire plugs into the unit, it should tell you the input voltage of the unit.  A lot of them are not 12 volt units.

newer sirius units have a voltage regulator in the tip. if you screw off the end of it, there is a fuse, and if you fully take it apart, you have the grounds (parts that grip into the plug, larger metal bars) and the tip, which is connected to the spring inside, which needs the 12v. tap into a switched 12v (ignition) and fuse it, connect to the wire connected to the spring. put the other lead to ground.
