I just installed an Alert 450R remote start in my son's 1997 VW Jetta. I have a couple of bugs I can't seem to work out. I can get the car to start with the remote but after an hour or so the remote start will not work. I then have go back and run through the tach learn program again. It will then start again but will again stop working.
The car is a manual transmission and the 2nd issue I have is programming the remote to start the car after it has been driven. The procedure is: While the engine is running, set the parking brake, press the start button * 2 times on the transmitter. Turn the key off and the engine stays running. Exit the car, close the door and hit the lock button. The engine should then shut off immediately. The problem is the engine will not shut off.
Any help is really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Do you have the door trigger wire H5/1 connected?
What are you using for tach signal? Four cylinder or six?
You say after an hour or so it won't remote start. The remote start doesn't crank or it cranks but not start? Could be loosing the tach signal. Try letting the car reach operating temperature and then learn the tach signal. Worth a try.
For tach learning, do all of the steps on page 25 of the install manual check out? Quite a procedure for tach learning, IMO.
Have you tried the Engine Shutdown Diagnostics for info as to what the shutdown reason is?

Thanks for the reply.
I do have the H/1 wire connected to the BROWN / white door trigger wire. Looking at the wiring diagram for the car I'm wondering if it should be connected to the BROWN / yellow wire instead?
I'll run the tach program, page 25 again and let the car warm up.
I haven't run the shutdown diagnostics but will.

It also states to cut the Violet wire Loop for manual transmission on the (-) door input. BROWN / White is listed as the door trigger
Let car warm up then do the tach learn.

BROWN / white is correct, NOT BROWN / yellow.

I had cut the violet wire so I know it's not that.
One thing I noticed was when I programmed the tach the remote does start the car. I then go through the steps to prep the remote to use, as I posted above, everything works fine but the car will not shut off. If I press the start button 2 times the car shuts off and then the remote will not work after that unless I program the tach again.
I did a factory reset just to clear out anything and reprogrammed the unit and the car is warming up. I post back again.

Maybe I'm not tying into the wire in the correct location. I'm using a spot along the driver's side door sill. Should I tie in at the alarm plug?

That's correct but test, use a meter or test light, one side to 12V+, other side to BROWN / white, will show 12V+ or bulb lights up until door closes, repeat this with all the doors.

Just did this test and all 4 doors show 12.89 volts when opened.

So that's the right wire, I'm sorry I can't help you any more, the Jetta never really sold in Europe* and I'm UK based. I'm assuming this is equivalent to a Mklll Golf.
Also I've never heard of this R/S but I know the car inside out!
I'm guessing a single coil, if so tach at the coil, light green wire (same colour as goes back to the gauges).
*USA = sedans, Europe = hatchbacks, you'll NEVER EVER see a Ford Focus or Fiesta sedan in Europe!
