Hi everyone.  I have a 2003 Impala with factory keyless.  I want to put a remote start on, and was thinking about one of the units like an RS1050 that doesn't require me to change remote fobs.  I did a search for impala on this site and found this post https://www.the12volt.com/installbay/forum_posts.asp?tid=9996&KW=impala that (I think) says maybe I shouldn't use an accesory that triggers off my factory keyless.  I can't find the note that was referred to, though, and was wondering if anyone knows more about this.  If I do put in a remote start that works by holding my Lock button for 2 seconds (as most do) will it damage the lock motor of the car, in time?

Thanks.

Jim

Holding the lock button down on your remote won't do anything but cause your key fob battery to drain sooner. I would recommend getting a remote starter that includes its own remotes. The effective range on a factory remote is no more than 45 feet. If you have to be that close, then walk the last few steps and start the car yourself. You can still lock/unlock the doors and pop the trunk with most remote starter's remotes. Some can even even do this from over one thousand feet away and let you know this through a LCD display in the remote.

Thanks, sparky.  I had noticed the limited range on my factory remote, but thought that, as I bought the car used, it may be because the batteries are wearing down.  Likely not the case.

If I do decide to go with a starter that has an LCD display, any recommendations?

There are many different types and models. Some combine alarms with remote starters. Check with what is available in your area. These units are more money than regular remote starters and the LCD remotes really eat up batteries. You will replace them once a month. There are many units that have long range and are very good. I use units from Autostart, but I don't know if they are available in the US. Shop around. DEI seems to popular down there and has a good rep. but I think they are only warrantied if a certified dealer installs them.

Thanks sparkie.  Has anyone had this experience with the LCD remotes?  I don't want to go through that.  I think that I will probably stick with a non LCD model anyway, as I don't want to go around with a huge keychain like I'm Schneider or something.  It needs to fit in my pocket, and I don't go buying those pants that are four sizes too big...

DEI has a new line of 2 ways that use LED's instead of an LCD display..they should be out this month..... they appear to be smaller than the Responder remotes and i hope will use less battery power.....
