I'm going to be replacing a head unit in an 02 Chevy Cavalier and the only wiring harness I can find had a data retention cable on it.  Can you bypass the harness, hard wire it and not use this cable, or do you have to rewire the entire car to bypass it.  Any help would be appreciated.

Also with the 70-2003, you have to mount the factory head unit somewhere else (I usually put it behind the trunk carpet in the rear drivers quarter panel). You need to retain the data aspect in your car. If you try and "hard wire" it you loose door chime, dome light, and airbags.
Just use the GMRC01 (from metra), it's got the built in module, it'll fit in your dash (no running harness into your trunk), and you retain everything (chime included).

when you bypass it like swerve said you have to run your own ignition wire. ive only seen it done, ive never done it personally. Im not sure what they tap into on those cars...
