I just got a 2004 WRX and went to put my 6900UB that i got for Christmas into it. I got everything installed and the ipod and radio work fine, but the faceplate wouldn't open all the way. It would try it just wouldn't open completely. I called Crutchfield and they sent me a brand new 6000UB and it is doing the exact same thing. I cant imagine that two different cd players had the same problem. Could I have wired something wrong in the back? The only thing i was thinking I didn't need to wire was the system remote blue/white wire. Any thoughts?

The face might be getting pinched? How is  it mounted? dash kit, iso?

I would look for some binding, or rubbing.

what kind of screws did you use to mount the brackets? Did you use the ones that came with the deck? If you didn't your screws may be too long. Try taking the radio out, removing the brackets and see if the face opens. If it does, its a problem with the way you have the brackets mounted.
