I've heard the alpine type-r's can handle 750 rms, and even 1000 rms watts. I have a 4.5 cubic inch ported box tuned at 35hz for 2 12's, with my two jl 1000/1 amps, I wanted to see how it would sound. but then i also have a box for four 12's, , turned at 35hz i believe, my friend gave it to me but its hard to fit in my trunk because its two seperate boxes that are 2.5-3 cubic, but they are to be bolted together to make 1 box. any help? would the 2 alpines in the one box i described be louder if i push them at more watts? i will take a picture of the box soon.

A Type R 12 can handle 1000 watts safely IF you know what you are doing...most people don't and fry them with rated power.
I ran 1200 watts rms to mine daily and it did fine.

I think he means, you can run a ka-gillion watts if you want, as long as you know when to stop turning up the volume. You can hear when a sub is starting to cry for mercy.

"If you know what you are doing" means keeping the signal clean and unclipped also.

If you keep the volume down then the amp wouldn't be pushing "a ka-gillion" watts, so this doesn't make sense.

It makes perfect sense. I could buy a nuclear power station and use it just to power my jig saw, and my jig saw only, just because I have pretty much infinate power at my disposal does not mean I have to use it all.
