Kenwood Excelon....... great sounding decks. Even the x-592 would be a good choice. Direct iPod control, either use iP100, or the cable that comes with the iPod. Plug into the USB, done.
Wherever I go, that is where I end up......

The Eclipse CD7200MKII would be my first pick.
Next would be the Clarion. Pioneer or Kenwood have some great features but have never been known for SQ.

What about Pioneers old ODR decks?  Those were some awesome SQ decks rivaled only by the Sony XES system in their day.

I should have placed a disclaimer, "SQ decks currently available." The current Pioneer and Premier units just don't do it for me.
Today, I wouldn't buy anything Sony, even for a paperweight. The XES and ODR were very cool and ahead of their time, just not available. Alpine has dropped the F1, Denon n/a, Nak gone, Mac out. Available choices are getting less and less.
My dream would be to have the Alpine 7909 re-released with some modern day tweeks.

I agree.  Old school Pioneer had some nice decks.  You could not pay me to own one today.  Heck, I'd flip for a modern version of a Sony ES high-end head unit (even though everything from Sony car audio that is available right now is only good for xploding.)
