Im planning on fiberglassing some custom door panels with 6 1/2in speaker pods when i redo the interior of my truck but instead of just fiberglassing and attatching to the existing door panel i want to make a completely new one. The idea is to start with a sheet of 1/4in plywood for a base and shaping with foam and fiberglass making the speaker pods and possibly flushing in a 7in monitor. Only thing i havent quite figured out is how to mount the panel to the door. I hate the plastic push-inserts the factory uses on the 94 chevy trucks and i could just screw it to the door but i dont want screw heads to show. I was working on one of my friends trucks which is a 97 f-150 and liked how the door panels had little tabs on the back that held the panel on and you basically had to undo 1 or 2 screws and the panel lifted up and out. Anyone familier with this? Any other suggestions as to how i could make all new panels and how to secure them to the door?

I like to embed backstrap into my door panels while I am glassing. If you get the ones with relatively larger holes in them they hold the door panels fine, and you can use the factory mounting holes. ^-^

He was referring to a piece of hardware that came with a new radio in the past.  It is a heavy duty plumber's strap.  He also thought that you were driving the f-150.  He was planning to have you duplicate the mounts on the f-150 door with the backstrap material and reinsert it into the slots in the door.

The easiest and best way to mount the built doorpanel would be, to use the factory door panel and those mounts..........Cut out all of the factory doorpanel except say 2-3 inches around the two sides and the bottom, leaving the mounts and maybe an inch....Leave the part of the factory doorpanel that sits in the window seal .........build like you stated from there.....using the factory mounts ,you will have a factory fit.

you can also still use the screws. if you dont like the heads to show use  those little round things that stick in them. or you can get some nice looking hex head stainless for the door panel and your speakers to match. that way it wont look so home made i guess you could say.
possibilities are limitless. if you can think it you can do it.

Just a a quick FYI... I'm a girl. As for the backstrap I guess I should have been more specific... oh well... ^-^
