I always heard that smell was just the surround on the subwoofer like stretching I guess?  Would it really be the voice coils, etc.  I'm not very knowledgable when it comes to subwoofer parts.

I have never smelled a surround. I have smelled many a toasty voice coils.

sounds wierd, but i'm familiar with that smell. it's not burning, isn't just the new sub getting broken in.

just like a new car, it'll go away after a while. mmm new sub

Occasionally if too much adhesive is used when attaching the voice coil former to the cone of the woofer it can heat up and burn off causing quite an odor. But, more often than not it is like most people already said a sub being over driven.
