Is it possible that I might need a stronger ground to the alarm brain? The current ground is good enough to run everything else, however, starting the car might need a better connection.
Any suggestions?

i wouldnt think that would be the problem....    when you say "everything else works"   what do you mean?  doors lock and unlock?  do the park lights flash when you hit the lock unlock buttons?  (this will tell you that the ant and remotes are ok)

only things that will prevent RS is a shorted gray hood pin wire or an open BLACK/ white NSS wire..... unplug the connector from the brain and meter the grey hood pin wire to verify it is open...it may be shorting going thru the firewall... also meter the BLACK/ white NSS wire to verify that it is seeing ground all the time....

are you pressing the RS button 2 times within 4 seconds?  as is the default ?    (i always program this model to 1 press activation on DEI's recommendation).....

Yes, doors unlock, lock fine- LED, horn honk, and parking lights flash and works via remote.

I will verify this later on today with a multimeter...

Yes, I press it twice within 3 seconds on the remote. I even tried tapping the remote start activation wire by hand twice on a good ground, effectively bypassing any problem with the remote.

As soon as I cut the brake wire, the car started without hesitation.
The brake input wire was providing a 12+ constant.
Now, I can finish the install.
Thanks for all the help.
