1998 honda smx dash instruments

Hi - I have a 1998 Honda smx, which has started a problem when switching on side or headlights.

Instrument dash illumination goes out, fuel and temperature gauges go to maximum, rev counter stops working, and indicator green symbols glow permanently !

The lights still work OK. 

Switch the lights off and all goes back to normal.

Problem is i dont have a wiring diagram for this vehicle as its an import.    Suspect an earth fault, or relay problem ??   but dont know where to look !

Anyone experienced similar kind of thing with any other honda model, or guidance on possible relay location welcomed.

You'll find it very difficult finding a wiring diagram for SMX.  I recently used the CRV (1997) wiring diagram to to install equipment.  The colour coding is identical and you'll need to figure out which wires to dis-regard (e.g. the SMX has two window closing switches whereas the CRV has four as standard).  The wiring diagram can be down loaded here.
