i'm about to attempt a car starter in my truck. i have reviewed the wiring diagrams and such, but i have sort of a silly question. are all the wires i need going to be found in the steering colum? if not, is color codes the only way to make sure i have the correct wires?

thanks

No, they won't all be at the steering column.  You can NOT go by color alone - you use color as a reference and you verify with a volt meter.  I've seen many things damaged by people going strictly by color - it turns out every manufacturer uses multiple wires of the same color.

For a typical remote start a lot of the wires will be at the steering column, then some will be in the drivers kick, and then a few more under the hood.  Since you didn't list what car you have it will be absolutely 100% impossible for anyone to give you any detailed information about your specific install.

RT-1WAM-AS is the model.
Ideal - cmon dude, add to topics in a useful manner, not stuff that is obvious.
Story - Phzzzt! Hey, what happened?! ... Isn't it obvious?
Moral - Never dismiss the obvious.

so i just read over the installation manual and i think i'll tackle it one step at a time. i think i'll start by wiring up the remote start by itself. here is what i'm looking at:

remote start -- posted image.

is it safe to assume that i'll only be using CN1 and the CN2 plugs, just to be able to get it to start?

any help would be great! this will be my first starter install

If you don't care about the alarm and convenience features, just RS, you'll still probably need a few of the other wires.
From CN1 - you can leave the anti-grind/starter kill alone if you don't care about those features. I'm not sure exactly how the "pre-wired 2nd start/ign./acc. relay" is set up, but I'll get to that.
CN2 - (-) starter output is the only wire you need. This, connected to that pre-wired relay, will be your Starter 2 output.
CN3 - brake and hood inputs should be used, for safety's sake. I'd also recommend you use the "engine sensing" which will go to a tach source on the vehicle.
Also the Antenna and LED connectors should be connected. Antenna is obviously mandatory, LED I'm thinking probably is used if you try to change some of the programmable options on this RS.
