I used the DEI 555L on my 2002 GMC Sierra. Here's instructions for it: http://www.directed.com/guides/manuals/ig/accessories/N555L_7-02B.pdf.
I grabbed the tach wire @ the module under the hood. It's toward the lower front of the driver's side. Sorta under the battery, just behind the radiator.
I've had it in for about 6 months, and have had no problems.
