cadillac charging system

I have a 1986 cadillac deville 4.1 with a 240a alt. and a 800cca 1000c battery. I was working fine till now. Yesterday I attempted to jump a 4.9L engine same car except it was a 93. Couldn't get it jumped. So the car worked fine until I was driving it and when I pressed the gas the no charge telelight came on. So I would not press it and it went off. When I got to my destination I checked the cables all clean and secured and the belt was fine. So as I left to go home my headlights dimmed and my faceplate flickered. So I took the flace plate off and parked it I got it on a tow truck by having a jumper pack on the battery and when I drove it in the garage with no jumper it was fine but when I checked the voltage I got 11 volts. So I changed the alt with a factory 120a with the same battery and it started no problem but the alt. Got warm and started to smoke. What gives, I was told I needed to either change my battery or get my old alternator fixed can you all help me.1993 sdv

How long after you put in stock alternator did it smoke...?M.E.C.P & First-Class

like 5 min the aftermarket radio was off and the car was just idling. i checked the batties voltage and the alts and they were both 14v. then the alternator was getting hot then it smoked. could the battery have a dead cell causing the alternator to act up and die1993 sdv

i went to the shop and the guy told me i had a bad diode and the postive lead should had been bigger. so basically the shop sold me a bootleg half modded alternator. and he was suprised it lasted that long1993 sdv
