different subwoofers...difference low end responses...different group delays...add it all up and you have sloppy bass that sounds like throwing a hot dog down a hallway.

If he does wire them to 2 seperate amps would it still sound like trash? I just dont understand why it would. if you have 2 good 12"s and 2 good 10"s and put it in one car why would it sound like trash?

If the trunk dont rattle then its not loud.
If it's to loud then you're to old.

I agree it dosen't have to sound bad if done correctly. In my SQ car in USAC I used to have a 12" in each quarter panel in the back seat and 2 ported 15"s in the trunk and the judges really liked how it sounded. (I had bass turned down extremely low but regardless)

Also sometimes the only way to really learn is to experiment with different things and who knows maybe he will love it. I remember I loved my first sub which was a 12" orion cobalt, now I realize it really didn't sound that great, but back then I was really happy with it.
