My first backup camera went out, I think it was from being wired to a switched lead.
Should a backup camera have a toggle switch to turn off power when not in use?
I like to see my trailer connections on m y z3 when under way, so hooking the power to the reverse lights is really not an option

you could feed it from the reverse light and with a switch just by isolating with diodes, that way it would be automatic when in reverse, and you could switch it on any other time you need.

The reason most BU Cams die is from heat when run constantly. If they are in a plastic housing there is no way for them to cool. This is why most commercial cameras are in aluminum housings. Check out the ACA200W camera (just search it on google). All aluminum and designed to run constant or switched.
