touch it with the wire harness's ground wire right? what kind of results are we looking at here when i do this?

Yes grounded to the radio's ground wire will be fine. If you touch and hold the grounded wire to either RCA cable, the result you are looking for is the popping noise is to go away.

its called troubleshooting. you do something to fix the problem, see what happens, and you make your next move based on what happened before. if it works then fine, but if it doesnt then you move on to the next idea.
