Mike T's +1 was his  way to vote for the answer that I gave.   There is nothing German about that technology.  It is even used in GM products.

Honestly that is a VERY easy radio to remove. The shroud pops off around the radio and there's 4 torx bits.... actually.... here's a link.

go to page 5. Dealerships 9/10 when it comes to audio stuff mark up the cost for doing even the simplest things because they simply just don't understand it most times.

Good info. Thanks!  Any advice on how best to remove the trim panel around the radio without damaging it or breaking the clips?

Plastic panel popper is what i use. They can be bought cheap at harbor freight, or just go to autozone or napa and they may hve something available as well.

Thanks!  Curiously, the service mgr. at the VW dealership where I bought the car said to get at the radio they'd have to take out the gloove compartment and disassemble much of the dash board.  Quite a job, he said!
