Mike T's +1 was his  way to vote for the answer that I gave.   There is nothing German about that technology.  It is even used in GM products.

Honestly that is a VERY easy radio to remove. The shroud pops off around the radio and there's 4 torx bits.... actually.... here's a link. http://documents.victorytechnologies.com//documents/product/8575.pdf go to page 5. Dealerships 9/10 when it comes to audio stuff mark up the cost for doing even the simplest things because they simply just don't understand it most times.A DMM is a beautiful thing.

Plastic panel popper is what i use. They can be bought cheap at harbor freight, or just go to autozone or napa and they may hve something available as well.A DMM is a beautiful thing.

Thanks!  Curiously, the service mgr. at the VW dealership where I bought the car said to get at the radio they'd have to take out the gloove compartment and disassemble much of the dash board.  Quite a job, he said!Don
