Trunk poppers pull big power usually but almost guaranteed that the button up front is sending signal to a relay. Set your DMM to Ground continuity, ground one lead to chassis and stick the other lead at the button wires and press the button, if one of the wires makes your meter beep when pressed you've found the negative trigger. Also try the same setup and check for voltage just to verfiy.
