Putting a starter in a 2001 Alero, the trunk release is a negative trigger.
The remote start has a 500mA Output for a relay trigger for the trunk.
The wire itself (for the trunk release in the vehicle wiring harness), is quite small 16-22 gauge.
Is this wire to trigger a relay down the line? Is my 500mA output from the remote start enough or do I need to trigger a negative signal with a relay?

as long as it is a negative output you will be fine to connect that directy to the wire in the car

Something someone taught me a long time ago is what I use to determine whether or not a relay is required.
Find the proper wire using your DMM, once you have the proper wire take an old fashioned bulb test light to the wire. Hook the ground clip of the test light to ground and tap the wire with the probe end of the test light. If the device activates you do not need a relay, if it doesn't activate you need one.
Installer, IT support, and FFL. I need less hobbies.

Understand the thought there. Truth is, if it's before a factory relay it mA output will activate it.

Thank you 12voltz! Do you non-believers in my desires to keep using Mr. Snap-On now realise what I'm preaching when I say use their bulb tester to trigger locks etc? Even if that bloody bulb costs $5 here
