Today my HU (excelon KC-X591) stopped working; I checked all the fuses and they were ok. When I disconnect the eq (soundstream MPQ-5XO) the HU started working again. I test the eq outside my car and it worked but when I connected in my car the HU stopped working again.I checked the voltage and when I connected both (HU and eq) together, it drops to 5 volts. The HU and the eq shared power, remote and ground wires. Right now the eq is not connected. Any ideas? Thank you.

Run a new power wire to the Eq.

Well sneakycyber, that might get rid of the problem of getting the eq to work; what I don't understand is what is causing this problem (the eq has been connected for 4 months!).

my guess is that the head unit and the eq are sharing more than just the power wire. They are also sharing the ground wire. Factory grounds are notoriously known as bad grounds since they paint before installing components.
I would recommend new power wire AND new ground wire.

Yes icearrow6; they share power, remote and ground wires, although I'm not using the factory ground.

cool. you should just use new power wire.
Connections corrode, crimp connections get loose. It happens, just run new wiring. you'll be fine.

Is this a pre-amp EQ or a powered EQ?

The current draw of a pre-amp eq is nearly non existant.  With both units connected and powered up, you need to use a volt meter and check the voltage getting to them.  Black meter lead on the chassis of the radio or eq, whichever you are testing.  And the red lead on the yellow wire of the unit.

sounds like something is shorted out inside the eq. you say you bench tested it separately but just because it lights up doesn't mean it is in working order. either that or you have a very very very bad ground in which case the radio wouldn't work either and like i am an idiot said they draw next to no current so my bet is on an internal short in the eq.
what brand of eq is it?
