What do you think about the Bulldog deluxe 500 remote start system? I know it probably doesn't even come close to comparing to compustar or ultra start, and the brand is well ehh..
The reason I ask, a buddy of mine has one brand new, never opened that he bought for his dad's truck and is not using it now. He said he would sell it to me for $40. And well for that price, if it starts my car from a decent range I don't think I can complain.

I am not familiar with the Deluxe 500 model.  I have used their RS1100 and RS1200 models.  ( I installed a RS1100 in a '06 Caravan that I used in field service work.  Made 10-15 stops a day for 114,000 miles.  Never even burped and I used it so much I had to replace the remotes' battery every 4 months.  )  While they do have limited programming options, if they are installed properly they work quite well.  The early models had a cheap remote but the new style is good.  My main complaint was the tach sensing circuit.  It had a hard time learning a single fuel injector or individual coil.  The Deluxe 500 might be different/better.  Additionally the Deluxe500 is an alarm with that extra circuitry to deal with.  ( Your car already has a factory alarm. )  On the plus side, it is manual safe.  On the negative side, it has options for "Oil Pressure" sensing.  Most people on this forum recommend steering clear of any remote start systems that use that method to determine if the engine has started.  Bulldog does have a Tech Support department to support the DIYer.  The wait time can be long but the info is usually sound.

Hmm. Thanks, I think I might just go with that.
The deluxe 500 is not a alarm also. Just a remote start/keyless.
It does have options for oil pressure sensing, however it does also have tach sensing. So if I just use the tach sensing option I should be good then right?
Thanks for all your help again! You have been VERY helpful.

I stand corrected.  The Deluxe 500 is only a R/S & keyless entry unit.  The door trigger inputs and the Alarm Programming section fooled me ( the manual is hard to follow   2009 subaru legacy remote start - Page 2 -- posted image. ).  The door triggers are required for a manual trans install.

The Deluxe 500 requires Tach or Oil Pressure sensing in manual trans mode.  The Tach sensing mode says it needs a 1 to 6 volt AC signal.  You should be able to get one at the coil pack.

Bulldog also makes an "Key in the Box" bypass.  The Model 791.  I used one on a 2010 Forester recently with no issues.  You might find that less expensive than the DEI 556U.  That way the entire setup would be Bulldog and allow for easier support from them if the need arises.

Good luck.

Yes it is very hard to follow. I got confused again if it did have an alarm after I posted that.
So besides the R/S and bypass unit what else will I need? (just trying to have everything before I attempt this)
(1) SPDT Relay
Diodes? (Will I need any for the door locks or parking lights or anything)

It appears that the Deluxe 500 has 2 ignition outputs which matches the Legacys needs.  No relay needed for that.

If you want the R/S FOB to pop the trunk, you will need a relay and do a (REV) on the Trunk Release wire ( WHITE/ Black at BIU ).

Everything else looks to be covered / compatable.   I would get some 1N4001 diodes for the door / trunk / hood trigger input to the Deluxe 500.

And of course an extra working ignition key.  I noticed some Bulldog 791's on FleaBay for $10...

And a soldering gun, solder, quality electric tape, heat shrink tube in various diameters, tie wraps in various lenghts, a DMM, a computer safe LED test light / probe, trim tools, flashlight, etc, etc, etc....

Here is a link to AudioVox for another wire guide : http://techservices.audiovox.com/Login.aspx   Sign up is free.  Remember these are only guides and all wires should be verified before making any connections.

Awesome! Looks like I am going to have a fun Saturday. Yeah I will verify everything.
I guess I am still confused as to when I need to use a diode?
Will I need a diode if i tap into a wire at my keyless/factory alarm unit?

The diodes are to isolate one circuit from another.  In the case of 4 individual door trigger wires in the car and you connect them all to one input wire from the remote start, the diodes prevent one door opening from being seen by the car as all doors opening.  ( If your car has a dash display that can show a single door open, if you connected them all to one wire without blocking diodes it would cross over to the other wires and confuse the car, showing all doors open.)  Here is a diagram ( and a better explaination ) : https://www.the12volt.com/diodes/diodes.asp      You will need them for the remote starts (-) Door Trigger input.  Your car has (-) negative triggers.

OK I understand that much of it (I think), however, for the reservation mode on this it shuts the car off when the last door closes. Now since the bulldog only had one door pin wire and I must hook 4 doors to this. How will the remote start unit know it is the last door. Even if I use diodes, wouldn't it just see a - trigger and shut off after the first door closes.
Unless I wire all 4 doors in series then maybe it will need all 4 doors closed to make the connection?

If you find, as Bulldog Security wire guide suggests, there is a All Door Trigger (  DOOR TRIGGER  BLUE/WHITE (-)   in DRIVERS KICK PANEL or BIU, (GRAY, 35-PIN PLUG), PIN 19 ) and find, as AudioVox suggests, a trunk trigger ( Trunk Trigger  LIGHT GREEN/ BLACK  (-)  BODY INTEGRATED UNIT  ) you can diode isolate and combine those to wires as your Deluxe 500 (-) Trigger Input.  The goal is to cancel Reservation mode if anyone enters the car.

As far as seeing the last door closed, the door(s) / trunk wires are combined into an OR Gate ( computer logic ).  Any monitored signal being (-) will qualify the output ( and prevent the engine shutdown and Reservation mode entry ).

Test the All Door Trigger with a DMM and verify it signals for any & all doors.
