Thanks so much for the help!
I didn't realize that there was an install manual here. That will help greatly.
Back to the function button.....
I press function and release the button. As soon as I release it the screen says level1. When I hit it again to hold for 3sec, it says level 2.

hmm, well that doesnt seem right, that is not how mine works. It should do a temperature report after you push it once and then hold it on the second push... Maybe someone else knows what's up with that, or it could be that something is not working correctly.

Having installed Clifford product for many years previously, I hated the Viper programming, it's hard. With Clifford it was almost a reflex action, just straight in, job done.
Some rules for Viper programming:-
Read the instructions at least twice.
Have patience. Lots of it.
The instructions are correct, they are written in installer shorthand.
Don't even attempt if you have a short fuse temper or high blood pressure.
You will get it right....eventually.
