I have plans to tackle a 04 Sierra in the very near future. This will be the first vehicle that I will be using isolation for whether it be via diodes or relays. I assume that everyone's preference when they do their installs is to use diodes?
This customer has told me that he went to GM to have an extra key cut, and of course needed one programmed...or so he thought. They told him to go to any key cutter and just get a regular key cut and it would work fine. However, I thought that it should have had ignition security from factory being an 04. Any thoughts? He said the only theft system in his truck was through the stereo, but I don't think that's going to affect me any.
Thanks!

Seems I may have posted a bit prematurely. My apologies. From what I'm reading now, the Passlock 2 system that is in this Sierra uses a resistor inside the ignition switch. So I can see how there was no need to have a new key programmed at the dealer.

Well potential customer. I still consider myself to be getting my feet wet so to speak doing remote starts. I wont tackle a project like this unless I feel confident in doing it correctly. I'm in the research stage looking at different options of getting around the passlock 2 system.
Thanks....

Here's my two cents.  Want to make this an easy install?  Use a quality remote start unit and an iDatalink bypass like the ADS DLSL GM.  Great for building confidence because it makes the install easy.

Here is a link to iDatalinks WEB site.  http://www.idatalink.com/support/helpdesk    Look up the truck.  The Solo series ( orange box ) modules come pre-loaded.  Download the install guide.  Not only will it handle the Passlock2 without cutting any wires but it will also handle the door locks and factory alarm ( if equipped ) plus supply a door status signal and a good tach signal.  All with only one connection to the car ( the ignition input I wire to the remote starts ignition input wire ).

Soldering is fun!

idatalink ads al ca is probably the easiest to use and most dependable ive come across.  just cost a little more.   i can do those truck starts in <45 minutes and they never come back with any problems   but the module will need programming.  think they may offer pre loaded modules?

Yes, iDatalink does offer 3 fully featured bypass modules for that truck that come already loaded with firmware.  While most installers use the Multi series like the ADS-AL CA, ADS TB or ADS DL and the ADS USB cable to flash them just prior to use, the Solo series in the orange box come pre-loaded with firmware and are ready to go right out of the box.

Would that be      ADS-DLSL-GM1? I looked at the install manual and it didn't say anything about an USB cable.
Thanks

Yes, the ADS-DLSL-GM1 comes pre-flashed with firmware and is ready to go.  The current version is ADS DLSL GM1 Ver 4.5.  However, it is still capable of firmware updates via the ADS USB cable as new firmware updates become available.  Typically the install guides don't include any info about firmware flashing, that info is found in the "Flash your module" tab at the Web site.

Thank you everyone for all your help. I'm going to order the ads-dlsl-gm1 today and hopefully the install goes as easy as i anticipate.
Thanks again..
