Door Triggers

How do you know if you have a (+) or (-) door trigger, I want to install neons to come on when i open the doors and go off when i close them, and im having some problems wiring them, when i ground them and hook the positive of the neons to the door trigger they do the opposite of the dome light, the come on when the doors are closed and off when the doors open, pls help!!!!
