thank you all for your help so far. i have had a good hard look and found the following. the live fuse goes to a relay. This is what i found, fuse goes to 30, 86 to thermostat switch, 87 to fan, 85 has two black wires one to negative on battery other to fan, the other 87 terminal (there are teo on the relay) has nothing on it.

It confirms what I was thinking - when the thermostat is off the fan side of the fuse rests at open (and not at ground). If you connect the beeper as Howie and Craig suggested it should beep once the fan is called for. This is assuming the beeper doesn't require more current the fan can provide through its internal resistance.

As I said before, but now modified because of the relay, buzzer+ to 30 BEFORE the fuse, buzzer - to wire from 87 on relay.

i think i got it. buzzer + before fuse and also to 30. then buzzer - to 87. is that correct?

If your fan is constantly switched on, only if the fuse fails. If you only switch on when necessary you need to run the buzzer hot wire to the switch output assuming it's positive switched. If not then you will need a relay.

If the switch is thermal, i.e. an "Otter" or temp sensing, I need to know the wiring layout.

i just finished checking the thermal switch. one wire goes to 86 on the relay, another to a probe type thing onto the top radiator hose, the third and last wire goes to a wire up under the dash to the instruments, i assume the temp. gauge.
