backup battery 520t w/ different battery

I installed a viper 5900 alarm with the 520T battery backup a few years ago. Even then I knew the battery that came with the 520T would not hold up for long so I tried it today and found that the battery is shot (probably hasn't worked in years).
So I am wondering can I use a different backup battery with the 520T? If so which is the best battery to get. Preferably one that can fit in the dash but I will mount it else where if necessary.
Also I'm not sure how the 520T charges the battery but I have a feeling it doesn't do anything special which may reduce the life of the battery. I saw another thread where someone modified the 520T with a diode and resistor inline. I think the point was to lower the amperage into the battery while charging and but let power flow unrestricted when the battery needs to power the alarm. Any thoughts? Thanks.

So I decided to get this ub1250 battery to replace the stock 520T battery. Here is the spec sheet:

I'm not familiar with charging this kind of battery. I assume the 520T just provides a constant 12volt connection to the battery. Should I just hook this battery right into the 520T? Will this drain my starter battery? Thanks.

Where space isn't an issue, you might find the 7AH to still be the best bang for bucks.
Some years ago when replacing a 23 year old Yuasa NP4-12 I was shocked to find the NP7-12 (ie, 4AH & 7AG; 14V respectively) was a MERE $35 - the same price as the 4AH.
Last week I found the the NP7-12 is ~$40 compared to the NP18-12 at ~$150. (18AH being common in domestic UPS and car starter kits etc)
The 520T seems to be a 0.8AH or 1.3AH battery and should be the same specs as other AGMs.
The only difference is max current drain and recharge.
Whatever charged the 520T can be used to charge larger AGMs noting that it may take longer to recharge, and that the 520T probably did not do any "battery maintenance" anyway.
Diode isolation and a current limiting resistor is common in these setups, but it depends on the system and its requirements. The resistor is to limit backup batter recharge current (to say 1A or 1oomA etc), and diodes to provide desired isolation(s) etc etc.
PS - Not that I am recommending the NP series - they are for standby use rather than cyclic applications (ie, standby-power for alarms, UPS etc rather than power for audio, camera etc systems) - I was merely conveying price & size advantages....
I think the (Yuasa) NH series is the equivalent cyclic AGM, though I knew of many that used the NP for cyclic.... I just don't know of their suitability (not that I have heard complaints, and AFAIK they kept using them) ... LOL - nor do I recall their rate and depth of discharge - they have a HUGE effect on battery suitability & life! (As your linked datasheet so clearly shows on p2 top RHS "Cycle Life verss Depth Of Discharge"!)
