It's a matter of choice, most of my work involves 1/4" drive, all my sockets and all ratchets bar one are Snap-On, better fit, longer lasting and stronger.
I prefer Stanley screwdrivers, and I use a lot of Craftsmen tools.
As you say though these other kits have more "bits" so that might make the difference.
I can buy a Snap-On small 4 piece pick set for about $20, I've seen equivalent tools unknown brand for $5, they lasted me about a month before either bending or breaking.
Even the MAC equivalent isn't as good.

Once its arrived and put to use I'll update this post in case anyone else is looking for something similar.

After talking with several trusted mechanics I decided a Steelman 19 Piece Master Terminal Tool Kit #95978 was a good starting point. Found it for $79 shipped to my front door. Here 'tis:

As I become more familiar with it I'll report back in case anyone else is looking for something similar.
