I was under the impression this is only an option on certain vehicles. Most posts I have read in the past accomplish this, on eligible vehicles, by extending the lock pulse. This can be tested by rolling the windows down and using the key in the door and holding lock to see if the windows roll up.

Not to be confused with one-touch up and down.
This only works when the vehicle has it ex factory, e.g. BMW, Audi, Mercedes, VW some Accords, Euro Fords and GM.
Never seen it on a Mits.
If your driver door switches work for up to a minute after turning off the ignition don't even bother.
On these (some models) the door control unit is mounted directly to the motor, on some models (Pajero/Montero/Shogun 2000 on), the motor wires are internal, don't even attempt.
I once had a 2000 Gallant and even with external wiring I STILL had to drop the rear door motors for access.
Most installers won't touch this job for all the money in the world.
Basically your installer is correct but if I were he I would charge you to take the door panel off and look at the motor wiring before proceeding.

The next stage is up to an hour fiddling around inside a door panel, except for the two seconds it takes to pop the windows between turning off the key and exiting the vehicle it just isn't worth it, believe me I've been there.
Drop the motor and there's a good chance it has to go back to the dealer to re-initialise it before it works properly again.
