I need some assistance regarding Polk Signature Reference SR crossover boxes that were discontinued over 5 years ago.
Polk made the SR5250 (5.25 inch) and SR6500 (6.5 inch). The midranges are obviously different, but the tweeters are exactly the same. What about the crossovers? Are there differences between the SR5250 crossover versus the SR6500 crossover? I looked at the manual and it states that the SR6500 have a crossover frequency of 3100HZ and the SR5250 have a crossover frequency of 4600HZ. Are there markings anywhere on the crossover or the electronic components that distinguish the 2 speaker lines?

ok, if your crossovers are designed for different crossover points then that is the difference right there. the one with the lower crossover point was designed for the larger speaker probably because it didnt sound as good as the smaller speaker at those high frequencies, so polk filtered them out of the mid and left those frequencies to be handled by the tweeter.
if you are looking to use the crossover for a different set of speakers on your own speakers then the results are not predictable because each crossover is designed to work with a specific speaker. if you use a different speaker then it also changes the way the crossover works too. if the crossover point is 3100Hz for one speaker then it could be higher or lower than that if you use a different speaker.
at best you will notice a difference in sound and at worst you could end up with blown speakers because the crossover is not filtering out the correct frequencies needed to keep the speaker happy and safe.
