my 88 jeep cherokee won't start.  it has 150k mileage, but ran great.  a couple times at the store i came back and it wouldn't start.  the alarm always worked, but when i turned the key, it buzzed a little but would not even click. (the starter).after a couple of times it would all of a sudden work and start the next 10 or whatever times.  then i t would repeat.  eventually it would not start at all, but the  battery seemed high.  the valet switch seems to shock you if you touch it, but i tried to bypass it, but can not.  it has been a couple of months and no luck. i need the car.  any ideas at all??????   I might pull the starter to test it, but i think it has to do with the statrter kill, if there even is one.Any ideas?????? Find the starter disable relay and remove it and then reconnect the starter wire that was cut. If the problem pursists, disconnet the alarm all together and see what happens. If the problem goes away, you know it had something to do with alarm but if it does not go away, you may want to check the stater wire that goes to the stater solenoid. Check for voltage going to the wire when it is not turning over and also check for continuity. If no continuity, then you have a break somewhere in the wire and you will need to run a new wire for the starter wire from the solenoid to the key cylinder. Use a systematic approach and you will find the problem.... just need some trial and error and time my 88jeep cherokee -- posted image.

Don’t know what to tell you other than if you get a shock that’s a sign of a faulty ground somewhere. I would follow the advice of Jeff he has the right idea, do things step by step until you locate the problem

If the starter buzzes or clicks at all it sounds like it's getting power, the alarm cutout would not allow it to do anything. This sounds stupid but, have you cleaned your battery terminals lately?? A corroded battery terminal will allow the lights and radio work but will not allow a high current draw like a starter motor. The other suggestion is the starter solenoid. I had a couple jeep Cherokees and if I recall, the solenoid is pretty accessable. If you give a little bang on the solenoid may prove it one way or another.

this may sound even stranger, but to clean a battery terminal, pour some coca-cola on it. the acidic value of Coke is extremely high. it'll clear battery gunk right off the terminals in a second. heh
I usually rinse them off afterward just to make sure they don't get all sticky of course
