Got to take another look at the car today and managed to get it working. I just added a second diode in parallel with the other one. I figured that the only thing stopping it from working was the high (around 600ohms) resistance of the diode so I added a second one to half the resistance and it works perfectly now. I was going to remove the diode but decided it would probably be safer to keep it in the curcuit. Thanks for all your help guys.
