Running a sub off a deck, That's impossible, if he's running 2 sets of speakers that takes up all 4 channels of 22-23watts RMS the deck gives out.  Leaving the pre-amp sub outputs, he must have a external amp running his sub.  Or if he is usuing the 23 watts of the deck thats still terribly low.

What subwoofer is he using?

troy you can run a sub by creating a 3rd channel with the rears(run seperate speaker channels and a bridge for the sub, like running a 2 channel amp in a 3 channel mode)...it works especially with something like an MTX roadthunder as they are small subs, I just think that its not a very recommended idea.

That Pioneer head unit does support running a sub off the rear channel. I'm not making this up I am just passing this on. The original question possed was what unit to get. I reccommend the Pioneer unit, I probably would not reccommend running a sub off it even though it is capable of doing it. Pioneer units sound great and have clean power if you are going to use deck power.

It's sounds weird but it's true.  No amp (don't ask me why) other than the internal one....It doesn't get hot either. And it sounds really full and clear  He's running an 10 MTX Thunder 600 in a Thunderform CF10 (non powered).  I didn't believe it myself at first but to prove it to me he let me take his car apart -No external amp.  But my idiot brother proves the strength of that head unit.  So I would go with that one.

I just bought a Panasonic CDX 983, got it off ebay for 217, I went up to a car audio shop near me and played with BOTH the Alpine Decks and the Panasonic. Hate to say this but the Panasonic sounded ALOT better. 2 things though, do you plan to add more to the system..ie Subs, 4 channel amp, sub amp??? If you don't plan to upgrade further then go with the pioneer, if you do plan to upgrade, I would say look into something better with 3 preouts(front, rear, sub), Panasonic, JVC, Eclipse, Alpine. So look ahead before you purchase, plan ahead and put something in that will be able to handle your later plans.
