I have a new Kicker Comp VR 18 that only lasted around 20 minutes of use.  I have it hooked to a Bazooka EL1500 (500 watt rms 2ohm).  The sub is a dual 4ohm.  The enclosure is a ported box with a slot port tuned to 33hz.  The internal volume is 5.6875 cubic feet.  The sub still plays but sounds real bad around half volume on up.  Any ideas why this sub did not last longer than 20 minutes.  The time that it did play it sounded great.   Thanks for any help.

Mike

did you go out and beat it hard right out of the box?  if you dont break a speaker in, sometimes they blow early.  a friend of mine had a set of SPL 12" (500 wrms).  he put them in a sealed box, a 400rms x 2 amp (audiobahn) on them and they blew in one hour.

it could also be music played below 33hz.  on a ported box,  power handling of the speaker is decreased below the port tuning frequency.

Pull the sub out and check and see if it is actually blown or not http://www.eatel.net/~amptech/elecdisc/vomillia.htm read the part about resistance / ohms it will tell you how to tell if your sub is blown.

thanks for all the replys

Well the sub is ok, I checked the OHMS and all the connections.  I have two seperate enclosures so I moved the sub to the other side.  Guess what? No problem.  Yeah,  my problem is that the top of the other enclosure was coming apart.  This is the reason why all boxes should have internal bracing.  I guess I, can blame myself for the error because I built the enclosure.  I braced all the inside of both enclosures and reinstalled the box and it sounds great.  Thanks for all your help

I forgot to mention that I forgot to put screws on one side of the top plate.
