Help with a sequence circuit?

Hi i need help building a circuit that will flash 4 lights in sequence.  what we are building is a portable tree to drag race atvs.  im not worried about the sensors like at actual tracks.  all i need is to be able to flip a switch, about 10 seconds later it would flash the first light, then the second, then the third, and the fourth light stay on until switched off.  there needs to be about 4 seconds between each light.  i plan to power it with a 12v battery.

Any help is greatly apreciated.

actually that circuit is easy to do, only need 2 integrated circuits, i dont know what kind of lights you want...? ill draw something up later

i dont have the lights yet.  i just planned to go to autozone and find some 12v marker lights or something of the sort.  what ever is easiest.

yea i would have done it like hotrod says, a 555 in astable feeding a 4017 decade counter, the problem becomes switching with brakes/ turn signals...

You could utilize a programmable relay.  IDEC makes a device called Smartrelay.  It's basically a tiny programmable logic controller allowing multiple inputs and outputs.

To build a drag racing Xmas tree, you could have it detect the staging and automatically begin the light sequence with it's random timer function.  It could also be programmed to activate the red light for your ATV buddies who bust the starting light.

An IDEC Smartrelay can be purchased for about $150 but you'll also need to buy the programming software and download cable...maybe too much for your budget???
