to clear things up about the 2 set-ups

Mine- Sony Deck(old a$$ one) L.A. Sounds Boubowa (brigded MONO at 2ohm) 4ga power and ground stinger RCA wires used a old alpine x-over to block out the high FREQ's and boost the 48hz about 6db...12ga speaker cable ran to subs, box dimesions where about 21x21x48 out of 3/4" HDF with a bead of liquid nail and 2" rock screws every 2-3"s

car was a 1983 Honda Prelude

Competitor- Sony-Xplode deck 2-Kenwood 1000watt mono blocks ran at 2ohm with 2ea- Kicker 12" solobarics in Kicker boxes (speced for the speakers according to mag hi-fi) 4ga power and ground built in cross overs, stinger wires, 12ga speaker wires

car was a 2001 Ford Escort ZX2 Sport

his DB read was 139.9 mine was 138.9 i have the punch plate somewhere...

SPEAKER LAB?!?  Wow, that's a real blast from the past.  I used to work with them up in Seattle.  Excellent quality equipment for the late 70's and early 80's.  Their basic degins were taken from a company called Utah Scientific.  Good luck finding them today... if you do, pick them up because even if the foam surrounds are rotted (and they probably are by now) SL's high-end line of 12" woofers were rated IIRC at 8 ohms, 500 watts RMS, 93 db/watt sensitivity, linear excursion of more than 12mm and had F3 around 23 Hz.  They used neodymium magnet structures and could really get low.  Although I never used them in car stereo (they are definately designed with home stereo in mind) they were pretty powerful speakers.

If you liked them, try the Poisidon from North Creek Music.  Or if you are really crazy, the Leviathon.  Someday I will put one of those in a car...  http://www.northcreekmusic.com/
