OK, then you only have one choice.  The subs should be connected to the amplifier with either the low-pass filter activated on the amp, or the electronic crossover used as a low-pass filter feeding the amp.  The other speakers must be run off the speaker outputs from your head unit and the crossover will have no effect on them.  This kind of setup is the most common in car audio and it also tends to be very bass-heavy.  If you want to get a bit more out of your main speakers, then using a passive crossover (like the "bass blocker" suggested above) can help, especially on your 3.5" set.  But nothing will really help in a setup like this short of upgrading your main speakers and ruinning an amplifier for them.

You say you have a "230 watt Blaupunkt stereo."  I assume you mean you have a Blau head unit that is rated at 230 watts?  Which model?

well, actually, he just left so I can't ask him, and I have no clue. I've just been typing in all of the information as he's been relaying it to me. but I do understand what you mean. I think your last suggestion would be the best solution - upgrading the speakers and running an amp to them. he's always coming across speakers and amps from all of his friends, so it shouldn't be too difficult to acquire some. thanks!
