Old Mechanic is right...but he forgot one thing......how to make the coils spark. There are a lot of ways to do this. And these devices are the heart of most of the flamethrower kits that you find out there. I have a great system that I just built for my old 1981 shovelhead. Take a look.

this might be a stupid question, but what do the cops think of flames shooting out of the back of a car?

is that legal?

Yeah, most likely get ticketed for modified exhaust or sumthin else along those lines.....

Lucky for me, everytime I got pulled over, the officers either wanted to know how it worked or wanted me to install it on their private carsFlamethrower Exhaust Made Easy - Page 2 -- posted image.

That is not street legal in any of the 50 states and I doubt it is legal in Canada.
Now please can this post die?

To answer a few of your questions......

1. To auex.....No, I can't let this post die. Some people may find it interesting. Did someone twist your arm up behind your back and MAKE you view this thread? If you don't like the subject matter, then dont click on the thread. Wow, that was easy. Bye bye.

2. To redlight831......I don't shoot flames when cars are within 30 feet behind me. If the ignition skips a little, it rains gasoline. Makes for a guaranteed "bad hair day".

3. To upjeeper.....Cops love it...I'm not kidding. I have travelled thru Md, Del, Va, W Va, N.C., Pa, N.J., N.Y, and D.C. shooting flames occasionally in each state. I have been stopped 3 times and everytime the cop said they just wanted a closer look at my system. One cop did a u-turn and drove 6 blocks to catch me....he saw me in his rearview mirror and he said he thought someones house was on fire. He had me draw him a schematic and a parts list there on the side of the road. The most serious comment I got was "watch out where you shoot that thing". As far as legality goes. I built another one of these setups for a friends Sportster and he said a cop pulled him over and was kinda snotty with him, but he didnt know what to write the ticket for, so he told him not to shoot it on the street and let him go. There may be something illegal about it, but at least 20 cops have seen it and no tickets yet.

4. To 98 Snake Eater..... I've been to your site and seen your work. You helped to inspire this flamethrower.

5. To upjeeper again..... 98 Snake Eater may be a newbie to this board, but hes no newbie to electronics and flamethrowers. I now know four people running these systems on the street. I built two of them. None of us have gotten even one ticket yet. You just need to show a little judgement about when and where to shoot fire. If you blast flames up in some tractor trailers grille, or set some trees on fire, you will probably get ticketed and maybe worse. If ya show a little discretion, its a harmless diversion and good entertainment.

6. To 98 Snake Eater....... That has been my experience also.

7. To auex....... Show me the statutes that says this is illegal. Ya know, for someone that can't stand this topic, you sure do keep coming back. Look, man, if ya want help building one, all ya got to do is ask. Cheer up, man, its gonna be alright.

I have seen 5 or 6 different ways to light these off. I am testing them all currently. Future experiments include pressurised air injection, propane injection, exhaust cutouts, automotive fuel injectors, nitrous injection, and flame vortex iniators. My PT Cruiser is my next test bed.
