I used to have one of these cars.  I ran my power wire through the spedometer cable grommet on the drivers side.  The grommet is big enough to get a power cable through.

Ok, if you need to run it across the engine from the passengers to the drivers side, just use wire ties or some sort of tie to harnes the wire to brackets or anything to keep it out of the way. Then instead of drilling holes, simply go through the grommet on the drivers side. The Grommet will surprisingly make a tight seal and you wont get any moisture through there as long as you do it carefully. You can drill all the holes you want, but when your firewall looks like swiss cheese, try the grommet.

thanks folks. i finally got it to work last nite.  it seems the firewall (on the passenger side) is actually two separate walls with an air pocket between them.  this pocket (separation) is what was confusing me. after drilling thru the 1st wall i thought i was (or should be) in the engine bay, but i wasn't i was in this pocket - between the walls.

the pocket was ~4"  wide. too small for the pilot bit to penetrate, but not too long for my 1/2"  drill bit.  i drilled thru one of the existing holes with this larger bit and VOILA!  came a few inches beneath my battery as i had hoped! amp wiring location for mitsubishi - Page 2 -- posted image.  (no swiss cheese result!)

not my only problem is being able to fit a grommet in that wall in the engine bay. it's too far down for me to reach with my hands and i can not access it from the car interior because there is the interior firewall there!  lol...oh well. i might be able to fanagle something to seal it to some degree. amp wiring location for mitsubishi - Page 2 -- posted image.

thanks again for all your help.
