Some cars have a nuetral position indicator switch located in the transmission that sends out ground only when the tranny is in neutral. I used this indicator to disable my remote start when in gear (as well as using the e-brake output as you stated).

So my car WONT start unless the e-brake is on, and the tranny is in neutral.
