Rather interesting question here. I've got a friend with a customer who's wanting to use some sort of passive starter kill device. He previously used the headlight switch, but his vehicle was still stolen and cleaned out. I've suggested the passive method shown on the site that allows a start without any visible signs (such as horn, lights, etc.), but we haven't settled on that yet. We've also considered the cigarette lighter....it would make a rather inconspicuous passive start switch. Ideally, if the lighter is plugged in (and heating up), it would allow the vehicle to start. If the lighter isn't pushed in, the vehicle won't start. Additionally, for added security (such as at the mall, etc.), he can take the cigarette lighter with him and the vehicle won't start at all until it's replaced. Anyone got a clue how to make this happen and still have the cigarette lighter function? Thanks in advance!!

omega hs a AU-SI-N unit just for that.......all it needs is a 12 volt switch.....you can also have the horn honk everytime the starter is bumped.....drop me a line if you want more info....

Thanks, draasch, for the suggestion. While that would work, I don't know if he can convince the customer to purchase another unit....especially since there is no alarm in this vehicle to begin with. He can't even get the customer to agree to that expenditure. The cigarette lighter was chosen for his preferred switch because of it's ability to be removed and be incredibly inconspicuous. He's considered hiding another pushbutton, but is reluctant to do that because of the fact that this customer frequently has other people riding in the vehicle and doesn't want them to be able to foil the starter kill. Good idea, though. Thanks!

I'd use the horn as the starter...

When the key is turned to "start" the vehicle, a relay is thrown and pressing the horn starts the vehicle.  It was done in my other vehicle and resting your hand "innocently" fooled my friends in the vehicle so it's a fast, easy quick fix.  There's more options such as using the brake and horn ring combo.  It's doable.

So how do you wire the relay, and if you can disable the kill.(at mechanics or car wash)  I want something thats somewhat new and the cigarette seems new to me.   I do not like the horn because after you do it, people get wise to it.  I plan on installing my alarm in two weeks so if you guys can help a brother out.......

In all honesty, If this guy "customer" cares about his belongings he would go out and spend the money for a good alarm. Trying to find all these ways  without spending a dime is a hard way to go. Obviously he dosent care enough to pay a little one time then to pay alot over and over. I would tell him your not responsable for anything that happens in the near future.

After my old T/A was stolen and my $1,200 stereo was yanked from it....along with countless other things..

I found myself wondering.....why didn't I ever bother to get an alarm? Although in this nieghborhood, I doubt it would have made much difference...but my car would have still been there!

The cig lighter is a good idea....if you're lighting a cigarette every time, or if you're certain no-one sees you. I would imagine that a relay with it's coil in series with the lighter power might work. Try it, it won't matter if it's on the positive or negative wire, as long as 85 and 86 are connected with respect to the current flow.

On my car now, I have a hand-me down stereo and I sometimes sneak the starter relay out if I feel uncomfortable about where I'm parking.

The cigarette lighter sounds like a novel idea, but you must also think of the fact that they are usually on the right hand side of the wheel, as is the key, ergo you are going to have both hands on the same side of the wheel at some point, since all lighters go to s**t at some point.  then the problem of using the lighter that much, the element will be getting a hell of a workout and burn out pretty soon, then you are up the proverbial creek, unless you have a glove box full of them.  The other problem with passive starter kills is that if you have the time and opportunity,  you can just short the starter under the hood, and presto, your ride just performed a Copperfield.  Your friend honestly needs to convince his customer of the need for some form of security system in conjunction with the starter kill.  Depending on the kind of car, I have a long list of very useful starter kills that I would rather not post out in public, since my customers are trusting their  cars to my honesty and secrecy.  Let me know and maybe I can hook you up with a good solution.
