I'm wiring a bike for a friend, he's fitted monentary switches in the handle bars and i need to get a latched output from them. i purchased latching relays but cannot figure out how to wire these so that one push = on the next = off!

unfortunately the only relays i could get hold of are twin coil latching relays, one coil on, one coil off, can anybody think of a way these could be used in a simple circuit so that the same button is used for on and off? maybe using another relay alongside?

i have seen the circuit using four or five relays, if i have to go this way i will, but that will mean i'll have to find room for a minimum of twenty!!! relays.

When Power is Applied to the first coil it will latch.

When power is applied to the second coil it will un latch.

Kind of like a Mechanical Flip-Flop.

Here is What you have now.

When 12v is on the LATCH terminal for even a second and removed the Relay remains latched. The only way to un latch it is to apply power to the UNLATCH terminal.

Hi john thanks for the reply, the problem i have is the bike is already fitted with 5 momentary contact switches in the handlebars, it's not possible to fit more. This is going to be a 'show' bike and has to look just so, i have brought some miniature relays cos i've got to be able to turn things on and off with the same switch! so it looks like i'm going to need 20 relays in a box, arranged in sets of four as shown in the latching circuit elsewhere on this site!

cheers

Let me see if I can wirk out a smaller version for you.  You could use a circuit instead of all of those Relays.

Here is a sample Circuit that uses a 6v relay to operate 12v with one button.
