Well after looking over many sites i decided that i better join this one because of all its many useful parts. At any rate  this Passlock stuff. I was wondering if somebody could help me. See what happend was is my gf has a 1997 Chevy Malibu and it had a 2.4L TC in it. I hate the motor. The headgasket blew. i Changed it. The timing chain went. So i pulled that out and put a 1997 3100sfi in it. Motor, tranny, wiring, computer all out of the same car. At any rate i got it all in there and for the last week i've been pissing with it untill it dawned on me about the passlock stuff. Its keeps flashing "theft security" every time you TRY to start the car. I have fuel pressure like crazy and the pump works when the keys on. it acts like its cutting injector pulse. It sparks all the time. At any rate how do i bypass Passlock? What happens if i go to the place were i got the motor and tranny and wiring and pull the igntion switch as well? I know that the "chip" is inside there but i  dont understand what activates it. is there just communication between the computer (ecm) or is there actually a Passlock module all by its self. Thanks allot. Hopefully you can help me!

Well if I understand you right you pulled evreything out of the donor car and put it into your current car. Depenind what kind of car you pulled the computer out of you ethier have passlock 1, passlock 2 or vats. The only way that computer is going to let you start the engine is if you reprogram the computer to a new key. The only way you can program a new key is with a TECH 2 DEALER programger. Unless you can find a key from the donor car you ethier have to see a dealer or your screwed. Removing the cyclinder from the donor car won't help at all, the cylinder is only a reader.

I have passport II and where can i find this Tech 2? yea u did understand me right i have all the things from the donor car. there isnt anything inside the key its self i know this much because i had a key made for it at walmart when the car was running with the 2.4L in it and it ran. So must be the jobber inside the ignition switch is responsible. I will double check but i dont have the chip on the outside of the key either. it looks just like a cavalier key, like a 1996. no room for a chip or anything.

there is no chip, passlock 2 works on a resintence value. if you look on the key there is 2 dots and thats what the cylinder reads. The computer must recive the proper value or it doesnt let the car start. So ethier you have to have a key that was programed to that computer or you will need to see a dealer about programing the computer for a new key/value. A dealer is the only one who can do this unless you got 4k for a scanner from Snap-on. A plain old ODB-II reader won't don't anything at all.

turn ign on for 20 minutes (until light stops flashing) old code is now learned into new PCM.

actually on the grand-am / malibu platform the resistance is in the key switch itself, have had past problems with grand am key switches breaking the resistor and not letting a vehicle auto start several times, sent customer to gm dealer to get key switch resistor replaced and this would fix a no start condition from auto start. i'd look at the key switch option.

I will certainly try this 20 min deal but idk..... at any rate the theft system light doesnt blink till i attempt to start the car. Thanks for all your guyz help.... So let me get this straight there is NO passlock module its all in the ECM its self right???? So if i were to get another ECM and ign. switch and key as a set i'd be good to go?

correct the passlock "computer" is the BCM i believe, not the ECM, but don't quote me. i recommend a tow to the dealer and have a new key switch put in with a new resistance and have them learn it to your existing vehicle BCM. that should cure your nostart condition.

shldofbenacwboy is correct, the BCM reads the Rcode from the key cylinder, if it matchs what it thinks is right, it sends a signal to the PCM to allow the car to start. The method I described above usually works to let the BCM learn the proper Rcode.

Yes at this point that is what it is looking like. I need to put the new wheel bearing in and tow it in. The car sat for long before i got around to it the wheel bearing seperated and is now bad, so i gotta fix that and then i guess i will have to tow it to the dealer. i have no idea how much it will cost as i've NEVER took ANYTHING i own to the dealer. About the time it runs is about the time i take it. If i have to take something to the dealer, then i guess i dont need to own it! Seriously though guyz thanks for all your help i was at a complete loss with this all. I think i will try the cheap-o route tomorrow and run to the salvage yard and get the matchin switch. If not...... to the dealer. I wish there was a way i could get a copy of the title to the car that the motor came out of. then i could take that to the dealer and they could make me a key, and i'd be SET!   Thanks again..

Matt
